High-risk pregnancies demand special attention and timely care and management. With appropriate monitoring, expert support, and lifestyle changes, many women with high-risk conditions such as gestational diabetes and hypertension can have healthy babies.
By Dr Prachi Sarin Sethi, Senior Consultant- Obstetrician, Gynecologist & Laparoscopic surgeon , Motherhood Hospitals, says, "Pregnancy is a special journey, but for some women, it is challenging and overwhelming. For many, it becomes a roller-coaster journey. High-risk pregnancies tend to involve health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, advanced maternal age (over 35), or a history of miscarriages."
These factors can increase the risk of complications for both the mother and the baby causing miscarriages or preterm birth. However, with early diagnosis, regular monitoring, and timely maternity care, many high-risk pregnancies can be managed successfully, ensuring a safe delivery and healthy outcome for both the mother and her baby.
High-risk pregnancy care involves closer observation by the expert, more frequent check-ups, and often a multidisciplinary team to support the mother throughout the pregnancy journey. Identifying potential problems without any delay will aid the mother in taking necessary precautions and preparing for any complications that might arise.

Tips for managing high-risk pregnancies

Go for regular prenatal visits: Women with known health conditions such as diabetes, high blood sugar, and thyroid or risk factors must start with prenatal care as early as possible with the help of a doctor. Frequent check-ups allow doctors to monitor the baby's development and manage the mother’s health closely.
Follow an expert-recommended care plan: High-risk pregnancies require a tailored approach. Your doctor may recommend specific medications, blood tests, or scans at various stages to understand the exact problem and guide you throughout pregnancy.
Maintain a balanced diet and stay active: Eating a nutritious diet, rich in iron, calcium, and folic acid, is important for pregnant women. Physical activity, if approved by your doctor, can also help manage conditions like gestational diabetes, improve overall well-being, and control BP.
Manage stress and get enough rest: It is a fact that high-risk pregnancies can be emotionally stressful. Hence, getting adequate sleep, practicing relaxation techniques, and seeking support from family is the need of the hour. Women can also seek counseling if need be. It is essential to take charge of your mental well-being for a smooth pregnancy and de-stress by doing meditation for at least 15 minutes per day.
Know when to seek help: Symptoms such as severe headaches, blurred vision, swelling, or pain should be reported immediately to the doctor. Quick action can make a meaningful difference. With proper care, women experiencing high-risk pregnancies can have a healthy delivery. It’s all about being informed, staying proactive, and following the guidance of the expert.
