Bryan Johnson Calls Extra Virgin Olive Oil A Game-Changer — Is It Really Better Than Ozempic? (Image Credits: iStock)
US entrepreneur and longevity enthusiast Bryan Johnson is once again making headlines—not for tech innovation, but for what’s on his plate. Johnson recently shared that he consumes a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) with every single meal. Why? Because he believes it’s one of the most powerful, natural tools for better health.
In an episode of The Diary Of A CEO podcast aired on August 3, 2024, Johnson called EVOO “better than Ozempic” — the popular prescription medication used for regulating blood sugar and aiding in weight loss. While his statement might raise eyebrows in the medical community, Johnson’s point was clear: extra virgin olive oil offers a range of benefits that make it a worthy staple in any healthy diet.
A Simple Addition with Powerful Effects
“What things can I do in my life that are easy and actionable, and have a high impact? Extra virgin olive oil is very close to number one,” Johnson said. “It is better than Ozempic. It is.”
Ozempic is a drug designed to support people with type 2 diabetes by improving blood sugar control and also has weight-loss benefits. Johnson pointed out that EVOO might work in a similar way, by boosting the hormone GLP-1. This hormone helps regulate appetite and blood sugar levels — both key components of weight management.
He referred to a study where participants lost an average of 5.2 pounds over nine weeks just by adding EVOO to their daily intake — without changing anything else in their diet. “I think the quantity was about 45 ml daily,” he said. “Somewhere between 30 to 60 ml. But it does so much more.”
More Than Just Weight Loss
According to Johnson, EVOO’s benefits go far beyond helping the number on the scale. He cited that it may reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer by over 60 per cent, lower post-meal blood sugar spikes by up to 60%, and cut oxidized LDL (the “bad” cholesterol) levels by 80 per cent after eating. These impressive stats have led him to make olive oil a must-have at every meal.
“I have a tablespoon with every single meal,” he shared. “It’s like the super of superfoods.”
What Makes EVOO So Special?
Extra virgin olive oil is the highest quality olive oil you can get. It's made from the first pressing of fresh olives and is rich in healthy fats — particularly monounsaturated fats — and packed with antioxidants. These nutrients help reduce inflammation, improve heart health, support brain function, and may even protect against certain types of cancer.
It also has anti-ageing properties, which might explain why it’s such a favourite among those looking to live longer, healthier lives — including Johnson, who is known for his intense focus on reversing biological age.
Should You Add EVOO to Your Diet?
While Johnson’s bold claim that EVOO is “better than Ozempic” isn't medically backed, the benefits of including high-quality olive oil in your diet are well-documented. Whether you're trying to lose weight, manage blood sugar, or simply support overall health, swapping out unhealthy fats for EVOO can be a smart move.
Like anything, moderation and balance are key. But if you're looking for a simple, science-supported change that could make a big difference, taking a cue from Bryan Johnson’s olive oil routine might not be such a bad idea.
