Think Vaping Is Harmless? Here’s Why It’s Worse Than Cigarettes (Image Credits: iStock)
What started out as a way to help adults quit smoking has turned into a serious health problem for teenagers. E-cigarettes and vapes, once promoted as a safer alternative to regular tobacco, are now everywhere — on social media, in pop culture, and among school kids. But experts are warning that vaping is far from harmless, and its risks are more serious than most people realize.
Dr B.A. Chaurasia, a Consultant in Internal Medicine at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, says, "The idea that vaping is safe or less harmful than smoking is a myth. We're seeing more and more evidence that vaping can cause both immediate and long-term damage, especially to young users."
Here’s why vaping is a big deal for teens:
1. Nicotine Addiction Starts Early
Most vape liquids have nicotine, the same addictive substance found in cigarettes. Even vapes labelled “nicotine-free” can still have small amounts. Nicotine exposure during adolescence can mess with brain development, especially in areas that control attention, learning, and self-control. This makes teens more likely to get addicted and more likely to start using regular tobacco.
2. Memory and Focus Problems
Teen brains are still developing, and nicotine can mess with that. Studies show that teens who vape tend to have trouble focusing, remembering things, and making decisions. These problems can stick around into adulthood, affecting their performance at school and in everyday life.
3. Lung Damage
A lot of people think the “smoke” from a vape is just harmless water vapour, but it’s not. It contains dangerous chemicals like diacetyl (linked to lung disease), heavy metals like lead, and other harmful substances. Studies have shown that vaping can make asthma worse, cause chronic bronchitis, and even lead to early signs of lung damage.
4. Mental Health Effects
Vaping can also mess with your mental health. “Nicotine can mess with your mood and make you more likely to feel anxious or depressed,” says Dr. Chaurasia. The emotional toll of withdrawal, chemical exposure, and peer pressure can be especially hard for teens who are already vulnerable.
5. Heart Health Risks
You might think vaping doesn’t affect your heart, but that’s not true. Studies have shown that vaping can raise your heart rate, increase blood pressure, and cause inflammation in your blood vessels — all of which can lead to heart disease. Even young, healthy people aren’t immune.
6. Peer Pressure and Marketing
Vapes are designed to look cool, with candy-flavoured options and sleek designs that make them tempting for teens. “The social appeal of vaping often distracts from the health risks,” explains Dr. Chaurasia. With celebrity endorsements and aggressive marketing, it’s harder for teens to resist.
Vaping isn’t just a harmless trend — it’s a serious health threat. It’s a gateway to addiction, disease, and mental health issues. The idea that vaping is a safe alternative to smoking is not just wrong — it’s dangerous. Dr Chaurasia urges stronger rules, better education, and more awareness among parents to tackle this growing problem.
