From Hair Thinning To Mood Swings: Subtle Signs Your Thyroid Needs Attention (Image Credits: iStock)
If you’ve been brushing off symptoms like dry skin, hair thinning, or sudden mood changes, it might be time to listen to what your body is really trying to tell you. These subtle signs could point to something more serious — a thyroid disorder.
“The thyroid gland may be small, but it has a big impact on how our body functions,” says Dr Nisha Kaimal, Consultant, Endocrinology and Diabetology, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai. “It regulates vital functions such as metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and even brain development and mood.”
Thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, are surprisingly common — especially among women. “Hypothyroidism, which is when the gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones, is the most prevalent thyroid disorder in India,” explains Dr Kaimal. “In contrast, hyperthyroidism is caused by the overproduction of these hormones.”
Watch Your Skin for Clues
One of the most overlooked signs of thyroid dysfunction shows up right on your skin. “In hypothyroidism, the skin often becomes dry, rough, pale, and even scaly,” shares Dr Kaimal. “Patients may also notice puffiness on their face and around the eyes.” Cold intolerance and reduced sweating are common, too.
But in the case of hyperthyroidism, the signs can be quite the opposite. “You may notice that your skin feels unusually warm, smooth, or moist — especially on the palms,” she adds. “Increased sweating on the hands and feet and, in rare cases, skin darkening or hyperpigmentation can occur.”
Hair and Nail Changes Are Red Flags Too
Your hair and nails can also reflect what’s going on with your thyroid. “Thyroid hormones are essential for hair follicle maintenance. If levels drop, your hair may become dull, dry, and brittle,” says Dr Kaimal. “Some patients even lose the outer third of their eyebrows — a classic sign of hypothyroidism.”
In hyperthyroidism, the issue is often temporary hair thinning, along with brittle, soft nails that may detach from the nail bed. “You might even notice spoon-shaped nails or vertical ridges if your thyroid is underactive,” she adds.
Mood Swings? It Might Not Just Be Stress
Many people chalk up mood swings, memory fog, or fatigue to stress or ageing, but your thyroid could be the real culprit. “Hypothyroidism is often linked to depression, poor memory, and sluggish thinking,” warns Dr Kaimal. “In fact, we recommend thyroid function tests for anyone presenting with depression, because the two are so closely connected.”
Meanwhile, hyperthyroidism may cause anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, or irritability. “Muscle weakness and fatigue can further worsen your mental state,” she adds.
Other Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
Beyond the skin, hair, and emotional symptoms, thyroid issues can also affect your weight, heart rate, and menstrual cycle.
“Sudden, unexplained weight gain or loss — without any lifestyle changes — should always raise suspicion,” Dr Kaimal says. “Hypothyroidism often causes weight gain and a slowed heart rate, while hyperthyroidism is associated with weight loss and a rapid heartbeat.”
Women may also experience heavier or irregular periods with hypothyroidism, and lighter, infrequent periods with hyperthyroidism.
When to Seek Help
A simple blood test measuring TSH, T3, and T4 can usually confirm a diagnosis. “Early detection and treatment can prevent long-term complications, including heart disease and severe mood disorders,” Dr Kaimal explains.
She also highlights the importance of thyroid health during pregnancy: “Around 2–3 per cent of pregnancies are affected by thyroid disease. Poorly managed thyroid levels can increase risks for both the mother and baby, so it's crucial to monitor and treat these conditions before conception.”
Lastly, if you notice a swelling in your neck, don’t ignore it. “Thyroid nodules are common, especially with age, and while most are harmless, a small percentage can be cancerous,” she cautions. “Early detection can lead to much better outcomes.”
“Listen to your body,” urges Dr Kaimal. “Whether it’s skin changes, fatigue, or mood swings — these may be your thyroid’s way of waving a red flag.”
