The research, which examined data from over 145 clinical trials involving more than 5,000 individuals, focused on the impact of flavan-3-ols—a group of plant-based compounds found in these foods.
The results were promising. People with high blood pressure who consumed flavan-3-ol-rich foods showed an average reduction of 6 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure (the upper number) and 3 mm Hg in diastolic pressure (the lower number). This decrease is comparable to the effects of certain prescription drugs, making these everyday items a potential addition to hypertension management strategies.
Beyond lowering blood pressure, the study found that these foods improve how arteries expand and contract, enhancing overall blood vessel function. This suggests broader cardiovascular protection, especially for individuals already dealing with hypertension or heart disease.
The quantities associated with these positive health outcomes were modest and easily achievable in a daily diet:
56 grams (about 2 ounces) of 75% dark chocolate
Three cups of black or green tea (around 700 ml)
Two medium-sized apples (approximately 340 grams)
The researchers emphasized that these benefits were most noticeable in people with existing cardiovascular issues, indicating that diet changes can be especially impactful for at-risk groups.
