The recent dust storm that swept through Delhi-NCR left a trail of destruction. Uprooted trees, collapsing hoardings, damaged property and unfortunately even casualties. What's most alarming is that many of these casualties could have been avoided with better awareness.
Videos from the day show people standing in the middle of open roads, at crossings, completely exposed to the storm’s fury. This is extremely dangerous. A dust storm is not just about swirling sand, it carries sharp debris, glass pieces and other potentially fatal objects. Being out in the open is one of the riskiest places to be when such a storm hits.
If you are indoors...
The safest place to be during a dust storm is indoors. However, make sure you close all windows and doors tightly. You can even seal door and window gaps with wet towels or cloth to prevent dust from entering. If you are allergic to dust, turn on air purifiers. Avoid stepping out to balconies, which often have flower pots and other items that could fall. Stay clear of glass windows as high-speed winds can shatter them.
If you are outside...
Immediately seek shelter and look for a strong building. Avoid flimsy structures, trees or large hoardings that can collapse. Never stand facing the direction of the storm. Instead, turn your back to the wind and crouch down low to protect yourself from flying debris. Use a damp cloth or scarf to cover your mouth and nose, wear a mask if you can. Wear glasses if possible so you can shield your eyes from irritation and injury.
If you are driving...
Driving during a dust storm can be extremely dangerous. If visibility drops, pull over to the side of the road, turn off your vehicle lights and keep your foot off the brake pedal to avoid being rear-ended. Stay inside the vehicle with seatbelts fastened until conditions improve. Keep windows rolled up and set your AC to recirculate air.
