The Board of Control for Cricket in India, or BCCI, has named Shubhman Gill, who played his first Test for India just five years ago, as the captain for the five-match series in England, starting next month.
According to news reports, the 25-year-old was named as Rohit Sharma’s successor following a meeting of the selection committee at the cricket board headquarters in Mumbai. Gill will be India’s 37th Test captain.

Shubhman’s flawless fitness

Shubhman is known as much for smashing records in various formats of the sport as for his flawless fitness. His cricketing prowess is complemented by his dedication to his health, which ensures that he has all the tools needed to maintain and elevate fitness, which shows through his on-field brilliance.
Shubhman, who started with the under-19 team, has always taken care of his strength training, weight, and muscle mass.
According to his fitness coaches, he indulges regularly in hypertrophy, which increases the growth of muscle cells through workouts. He indulges in weight training at least three to four times a week, involving various kinds of exercises and lifts like squatting, deadlifting, lunges, step-ups, bench presses, chin-ups, etc.
His former coach from Chandigarh, from where Shubhman belongs, calls him an extremely dedicated and hard-working professional when it comes to fitness. “I told him to do 10 chin-ups with 15 kg weight; he would try to give me 11 chin-ups. He wouldn’t stop at nine. His mindset has always been different, and it shows in his cricket as well,” said Sagar Diwan, Strength and Conditioning Coach, in an interview with GQ.

How does Shubhman maintain fitness?

To maintain his fitness levels, Shubhman takes care of his sleep, which he believes is essential for recovery. He regularly takes ice baths, also known as cold water immersion, which offer a range of potential health benefits, including reduced muscle soreness, improved circulation, enhanced mood, and increased resilience. According to experts, ice baths help boost the immune system and reduce inflammation.

Gill focuses on endurance training

According to his trainers, Gill is extensively focused on endurance training like high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, along with distance running. These training activities increase cardiovascular endurance, stamina, and recovery so that he is at optimal levels of energy during gruelling matches.
Gill also believes in working to enhance speed and quick reflexes, and so he regularly practices ladder drills, cone drills, and sprint exercises. These improve footwork, reaction time, and movement efficiency, helping him stay sharp on the field.

Shubhman’s balanced diet plan

Shubhman focuses most on eating a balanced diet—a mix of protein, complex carbohydrates, and proper hydration—which is important for a sportsperson's energy and recovery.
According to experts, a proper diet also maximizes muscle building, supports endurance, and keeps him in top condition.
