The heatwave had us praying for rains and now that the monsoon season is finally here, there is another problem that we have to save ourselves from: mosquito-borne diseases. Every year, they pose a serious threat and become a global health threat, claiming about 7,00,000 lives. They also account for 17% of infectious diseases worldwide annually.
Here are some easy ways to save yourself from the wrath of these vector-borne diseases this monsoon season?
Don't let water accumulate
One of the main places for mosquitos to breed is stagnant water. So you need to be on a lookout for this and keep cleaning, emptying or covering any item that holds water. Tanks, coolers, gutters or plant trays even. Change the water in the vases as well every other day.
Use mosquito repellents
You can go for anything that suits you: skin safe creams, sprays, roll-ons or even cloth patches. Make it a serious habit before stepping out. Take care of this especially in the evening the mosquitos are the most active.
Keep doors and windows screened
Mesh screens are going to be your saviours in the monsoon season to keep away from the sight of mosquitos. You can even use mosquito nets on your bed while sleeping. Install mosquito-repellent incense sticks when you go to bed.
Keep your surroundings clean and hygienic
Mosquitos don't only breed in water, they also hide in dark, damp places like closets, bathrooms and more. So make sure that you are regularly cleaning them.
Dress smartly
Wear light coloured clothes, preferably full-sleeved to minimize skin exposure. Mosquitos are attracted to dark colours and increased body temperature.
Boost immunity
Include vitamin c, antioxidants and zinc in your diet. A strong immune system can help you fight the infection as well if you happen to contract it.
Know the symptoms
Keep yourself informed with the symptoms of mosquito-borne diseases during the monsoon season like body aches, rashes, high fever or joint pain. Early detection is the answer to a proper treatment.
