Starting the day with a glass full of fruit juice may sound like the perfect 'healthy breakfast' but it cannot be further away from reality. As it turns out, when it comes to liver health, no matter how good fruits are for your health, for your liver, it's a big no-no!

The impact of excessive sugar on liver

Liver is a vital organ that is responsible for flushing out all the toxins and keeping your body healthy, storing energy and metabolizing nutrients as well. It also helps with digestion, plays a key role in waste removal and blood clotting. So when you have to take care of your liver, you need to invest in yourself by maintaining a balanced diet, moderating alcohol consumption and avoiding toxins altogether.
The liver's work is to process everything that comes along, including sugar. Fructose is the sugar found in fruits which ultimately metabolizes in the liver. While small amounts of this are tolerable by your liver, excessive intake may be overwhelming for its capacity. This may ultimately lead to fat accumulation and even lead to an inflamed liver in the longer run.
Researches that have analyzed data from over half a million people across multiple continents have found that sugar consumed through pure fruit juice and soda appeared to be more harmful than the sugar that is eaten in fruits.
According to the study, with each additional 220 ml (approx. a glass) serving of fruit juice per day (this includes real fruit juice, nectars, and juice drinks), the risk of Type 2 Diabetes increases by 5%. This is because a single glass of fruit juice is made with several servings of fruit and so can lead to a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This sudden influx of fructose increases the burden on the liver and causes it to work overtime. This ultimately increases the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
So, even though you may think that the 'fresh fruit juice' you drink in every morning is 'super healthy,' the sugar levels it contains can be posing a big threat to your liver.
