Long working hours often result in causing problems to almost all areas of your life. Latest studies have shown how they also negatively impact liver health and particularly do so in men. This leads to elevated liver enzymes and also increases the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD). Studies have shown that there is a stark correlation between working long hours (especially when you exceed 60 hours per week) and high levels of liver enzymes like ALT, which is an indicator of potential liver damage. In addition to this, irregular work schedules, like night shifts, can also increase the likelihood of developing NAFLD.
The biggest contributor to this is stress. Working long hours can lead to a sharp increase in cortisol levels. If there is a situation of chronic stress, elevated cortisol can trigger liver fat storage and potential result in NAFLD. Stress also causes a number of other issues in the body like increased inflammation while disrupting the balance of chemicals. This can potentially impact the liver function.
Due to NAFLD, there is accumulation of excess fat in the liver. And the risk of this appears to be more pronounced for those who are already suffering from obesity or other pre-existing conditions. Studies have also suggested that longer working hours, and night shifts in particular, can disrupt the body’s natural rhythmic cycle and increase the risk of NAFLD.
But that’s not all. While working long hours at your office can be a significant factor for liver health disruption, there are also a number of other factors involved. Your lifestyle choices also matter a lot when it comes to taking care of your liver. A diet that consists of processed foods, excessive sugar and unhealthy fats can worsen liver conditions. Excessive alcohol consumption is also harmful and leads to liver damage.
To prevent this, prioritize a healthy work-life balance. Maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
