While the monsoon season does bring in some relief, this time it has brought an unexpected and dangerous consequence to the district of Kolhapur. There has been a sharp increase in snake bite accidents reported recently. There were six new cases registered at the CPR Civil Hospital police outpost just in a single day. With the rising numbers of snake bite incidents there is an urgent need for heightened public caution. There are snakes appearing at almost all places in the district from people’s homes to their farmlands.

So, how can one be preventative of such incidents?

1. Be alert in wet areas: Snakes are often found in damp areas or near water resources. They are also more active during the monsoon season so at this time people need to be more vigilant.
2. Wear protective gear: Skip wearing anything short both for tops or bottoms. Especially wear long pants and gum boots as they offer protection when walking in areas where snakes might be present.
3. Keep your surroundings clean: Maintaining proper hygiene around yourself, especially during the monsoon season can help reduce the likelihood of snakes entering the property. Dry out any damp areas.
4. Be extra careful during nighttime: Always use a flashlight when you are walking at night and avoid stepping on snakes or anything that moves rigorously.
5. Stay calm: Even if you do happen to encounter a snake, avoid any sudden movements and try to retreat really slowly. Do not panic and act with calm.

First Aid tips you must know:

  • Call for help immediately: As soon as the incident strikes, call for help by calling emergency services and take the victim to the nearest hospital.
  • Keep the victim calm: Panic always worsens the situation so reassure the victim that everything will be okay and encourage them to remain still.
  • Immobilize the limb: If possible, immobilize the bitten limb with a splint or bandage to minimize movement.
  • Don't try to suck out venom or apply tourniquets: These practices are ineffective and can be harmful.
  • Monitor breathing: Be prepared to administer CPR if the victim's breathing stops.
