The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra began on Friday, June 27, 2025 and lakhs of devotees have since joined to witness one of the biggest religious events happening in Odisha. However, with the temperatures soaring high and humidity getting to its peak, about 750 pilgrims have fallen sick and 12 have also been admitted to the ICU. Official reports have said that more than 230 devotees were taken to the Infectious Disease Hospital while about 520 people are being treated at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). While most of the devotees are being discharged just after first air help, one critically ill devotee was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, for advanced treatment.
Medical emergencies are common when there are huge crowd gatherings like these. However, one can stay safe by taking precautions. Here are 5 safety tips you shouldn’t ignore if you are attending the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025.

1. Hydration is the first priority

Stay hydrated no matter what as dehydration is one of the top causes of fatigue and fainting during mass events like Puri Rath Yatra. Always carry a water bottle with yourself and sip from it regularly, even if/ when you are not thirsty. You can also carry packs of ORS or electrolyte to replenish lost moisture.

2. Dress according to the weather

Wear light, breathable cotton clothes with light colors that are perfect to reflect the sun’s heat. If you can, also wear something on your head to shield it from direct sun exposure. A hat or scarf can be helpful here. Wear comfortable footwear as well because you would be walking long distances.

3. Avoid standing in direct sunlight for too long

Prolonged sun exposure can quickly lead to exhaustion and end up causing a heat stroke. Find shaded spots to rest intermittently, and try to time your darshan or walk during cooler morning or evening hours.

4. Know the warning signs of trouble

Nausea, dizziness, excessive sweating, confusion and muscle cramps can be the warning signs of dehydration or heatstroke. Seek help immediately if such symptoms show up. Don’t wait for the condition to worsen.

5. Follow the crowd safety protocols

Avoid getting into tightly packed crowds where movement is restrictive and becomes difficult. Try staying near the edges and follow designated lanes. Always keep an emergency contact written down and accessible.
