SkinnyTok was widely used as a hashtag on the social media platform but TikTok has finally decided to ban it due to backlash over its promotion of unhealthy body ideals.
In recent times, with the increase in fitness influencers on social media platforms, many look up to the online coaches and their content for fitness tips and health related issues. Among the most popular videos are the ones wherein people are showing their weight loss transformations. Such before/ afters usually attract a lot of attention and also inspire others to do the same. However, in the middle of all of this, a number of weight loss methods are trending that can be unsafe and can harm the health drastically.
As per reports by media houses, TikTok has recently removed the hashtag #SkinnyTok after receiving backlash for promoting unhealthy body ideals and risky weight loss strategies.
This is not the first time that something like this has taken place. Back in September, a fitness content creator named Liv Schmidt was banned from the app for building her social media presence around extreme thinness and quick weight loss tips.
Following the #SkinnyTok hashtag, platforms like TikTok and Instagram are flooded with health and fitness content and videos. While at first glance everything may seem normal, helpful and informative, these videos often make bold claims on various quick weight loss ways that aren’t supported by science or even signed off by doctors or professional coaches.
Now what is more worrisome is that many people try it out without understanding the possible health risks that come with such a diet plan for weight loss technique. It is also important to understand that not everything posted online is helpful or even safe. Following unverified trends can do more harm than good in most cases, especially when it comes to one’s health.
