Native to Europe and parts of Asia, sea buckthorn, a small, orange berry, is taking the wellness industry by storm. Immune shots have become a favourite for those looking to strengthen their natural defences. While there are many options that exist, from the classic turmeric mixtures to the vitamin C mixes, the sea deer is attracting attention in both the clinical and overall circles. Supported by both traditional use and modern research, it is emerging as a top alternative for immune growth.
However, to know what really makes it extraordinary apart from nutrition, we speak with Dr Vishal Tyagi, Consultant, Fytika Healthcare Group. Let us get into the nitty-gritty of sea buckthorn’s numerous health benefits and how to consume it for enhanced results.
It is nutrient-dense and antioxidant-rich.
It is a remarkable concentration of vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. According to Dr Tyagi, a single serving of its juice has high levels of vitamin C, which often exceed that of oranges. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that is known to support immune cell function, reduce inflammation, and increase skin protection, the first line of defence against pathogens.
“Sea buckthorn is also rich in vitamin E and carotenoids (such as beta-carotene and lutein), which help neutralise free radicals. This antioxidant action plays an important role in preventing oxidative stress, which may otherwise spoil the immune function and increase sensitivity to infection,” he says.
It is a unique source of omega fatty acids.
Unlike most fruits, sea buckthorn offers a rare combination of omega-3, 6, 7, and 9 fatty acids. The omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), Dr Tyagi explains, is particularly rare in the sources of plants and has shown promising anti-inflammatory and mucosal-supporting properties. “It can benefit respiratory health, a significant anxiety for immunity, especially during cold and flu season. A balanced omega profile also supports skin and mucous membrane integrity,” he adds.
Since these are physical obstacles against pathogens, a well-maintained mucosal lining in the respiratory and digestive systems can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
It is anti-inflammatory and has antiviral properties.
Emerging research has shown that sea deer may have direct antiviral and antimicrobial effects. Some polyphenols and flavonoids in berries display activity against various types of pathogens, including influenza viruses. “Its anti-inflammatory compounds, such as quercetin and isorhamnetin, help modify the body's immune response, making it more effective without overreacting to concerns in autoimmune and inflammatory disorders,” Dr Tyagi says.
The Gut-Immune Connection
Doctors often emphasise the importance of intestinal health in immune function. Sea buckthorn juice, Dr Tyagi says, supports intestinal health through its fibre and polyphenol material, which serves as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial intestinal bacteria. “A balanced intestinal microbiome increases the absorption of nutrients and controls the immune system, making the sea buckthorn a double-purpose immune booster,” he explains.
How to Consume Sea Buckthorn
Sea buckthorn juice is powerful in both taste and efficacy. According to Dr Tyagi, as a daily immune shot, 1 to 2 ounces is usually sufficient. “Look for cold-pressed, organic juice with sugars or preservatives without additives. By pairing it with ginger or turmeric, its immune-supportive benefits can be further enhanced,” he explains.
Including sea buckthorn juice in your wellness routine is a scientifically sound option. The combination of essential vitamins, rare fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory compounds creates one of the widest natural ingredients available for immune support.
