The end of this week marks the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama—celebrations for which are in full swing in Dharamshala and the adjacent Kangra areas of Himachal Pradesh. The gathering has attracted spiritual leaders, dignitaries, and well-wishers from all across the world, including the popular actor Richard Gere.
Being the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people and global leader of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama has a very calm and soothing way of healing the world with his peaceful words. His eternal wisdom on how to be happy and spread joy around the world, riddled with wars, poverty, recessions, and hate, is among the most positive and healthy ways to not just take care of your mental health but also live a great life.
The Dalai Lama’s secrets to happiness are not just motivating but also help filter out toxic thoughts as well.

Secrets To Eternal Happiness for Mental Health

Help others to be happy

The Dalai Lama says whenever you are feeling down and out, try helping out people as it is the “prime purpose of our life”. “If you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them,” he says.
According to the spiritual leader, you would feel both pride and happiness in your mind, which is the best way to get over difficult times that you are facing yourself and heal your soul of all problems.

Leave behind your anger

“Anger destroys everything,” says the Dalai Lama. He believes that you can attain peace of mind only when you step away from extreme emotions like rage and fury. Anger can completely consume you, adding hatred and envy to your personality, thereby depriving you of happiness.
Anger, experts believe, can lead to many mental health issues like depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and even alcohol misuse. And so, it is important to control your emotions.

Be positive

One of the best ways to be happy, according to the Dalai Lama, is to be positive. “Choosing to be optimistic feels better." When you choose to shift your perspective towards the positive side, you are allowing yourself to feel better.
Positivity also brings joy, negates symptoms of anxiety and depression, and helps you become stronger mentally.

Choose your actions wisely

“Happiness comes from your actions.” The Dalai Lama believes that your actions are the basis of your feelings, which can make you happy or sad, thereby affecting your mental health. He adds a few tweaks to your regular habits, like getting more sleep and exercise, that may help you get there.

Practice gratitude

Simply, being grateful gives your mood a big boost, among other benefits. However, they do not always need to be big things. A small help to your co-worker or a wave back to your neighbour could be the much-needed warmth of the sun on your skin.
Over time, you will find yourself noticing more and more positive things.
