An interventional cardiologist, Dr. Sanjay Bhojraj took to Instagram to share a daily habit that can help in lowering the heart disease risk by almost 50%. The cardiologist also revealed the magic trick being simply walking everyday. He highlighted the importance of walking to combat heart diseases and wrote, “You don’t need to biohack your way to longevity. A 20-minute walk today could protect your heart for years. Simplicity saves lives.” He says that the daily habit of walking can ‘lower your heart disease risk by nearly 50%.’
According to the Dr. Raj, a 2023 meta-analysis study has showed that when a person walks just 20-30 minutes a day they are cutting the heart disease risk by up to 49%.
This research has revealed that a faster walking pace is also linked with a number of other benefits that include a substantial 64% reduction in the likelihood of cognitive decline as well. In addition to this, individuals who walk with slower gait speed showed an increase in the likelihood of experiencing elevated depressive symptoms along with symptoms of heightened anxiety and cognitive impairment. These findings are very significant in underscoring the diverse health benefits of faster walking, including improved cognitive health, mental well-being, and increased longevity.
Why faster walking helps and reduces heart disease risk:
It helps in lowering down blood pressure which in turn helps in keeping your heart healthy
This also improves circulation of blood throughout the body and enhances heart rate variability
Along with this, faster walking also helps in lowering cortisol levels and improving mood
“It's not about HIIT (high-intensity interval training) or logging miles. It's about moving consistently. Longevity doesn't require a gym. It starts with a walk,” the cardiologist explained.
