Like everything digital, smartwatches too come with a lot of rules, and if you are not getting it all right, you are probably not even getting the readings right. Your data could be slightly off if you are just slapping that watch on like a regular timepiece because placement, fit, and even which wrist you choose actually matter more than you would think.
Left or Right?
First off, which wrist is the “correct” one? Technically, there is not a hard rule. Most people wear it on their non-dominant hand. Your dominant hand does more flailing, typing, and lifting, which can mess with readings or trigger accidental taps. While it is totally your call, just make sure you set your watch settings accordingly—most smartwatches ask which wrist they are being worn on, and yes, it makes a difference.
Where Exactly Should It Sit?
Your smartwatch is not supposed to sit on the wrist bone. For accurate tracking, especially for heart rate monitoring, your watch needs to sit above that bone, a finger’s width higher up the arm, closer to your elbow. That is where the sensors can get consistent, uninterrupted skin contact.
Not Too Tight, Not Too Loose and Which Side Up?
It wants that “just right” fit—not so tight that it leaves a dent on your arm and not so loose that it is moving up and down your wrist. Moreover, the monitor of your smartwatch should be placed on the top of your wrist, not on the palm side.
Why does this matter? Smartwatches rely on sensors like optical, electrical, and haptic, all of which need to be touching your skin to function properly. If there is even a tiny gap, you are risking inaccurate heart rate readings or missed data altogether. However, during workouts, you can tighten the band slightly to keep things secure. Post-workout, feel free to let your wrist breathe a bit, but just make sure the back of the watch still touches your skin.
Why This All Actually Matters
A badly positioned watch can skew your health stats, throw off your activity rings, and make you wonder why your heart rate is 140 while you are just resting on your couch.
