During a doctor’s visit in Mumbai in 2024, Usha Rachael Thomas heard the words that left a mark and changed her life forever, “You are walking and talking but physiologically you should be in an ICU.” Usha was working as a senior brand strategist and was used to working under pressure where the stakes were high. But she never knew the reality that was waiting her. She had been quietly inching towards a diabetic coma as per the results from the tests she had gone through.
Something that was shocking was that her body gave no dramatic signs. Just a growing fatigue that lingered in the back. She was tired and exhausted after every meal. For two months, she dismissed the symptoms saying that it was stress or excessive heat exposure, but her blood sugar told a different story. “The number on the glucometer 500, 538 to be precise, more than five times what it should have been," she recalls while giving an interview to a media house.
Her story’s version was that she was just tired all the time. Eventually the truth turned out to be something else completely. It became a medical emergency that evolved into a deeply personal return to self-awareness, self-respect and a coming to terms with the concept of self-care.
Signs that were ignored
Usha said that she had been feeling unusually tired, especially after she had her meals. This is one of the major signs of diabetes. A quick breakfast would come with an overwhelming urge to sleep right after. The same thing happened to her post-lunch. She blamed it on the city’s relentless heat and some on the stress of the company’s merger.
The excessive thirst? Another big sign of diabetes, she blamed dehydration. The frequent urination became a natural outcome of drinking more water. These were all signs that she missed - the signs for help. There was no one else to notice the red flags either.
