“Your Gut Can Turn Into A Gutter”: Health Coach Warns Against Eating Bread Daily (Image Credits: iStock)
Bread has become a staple in many households — a quick, easy, and comforting choice that finds its way onto breakfast plates almost every day. Whether paired with tea, butter, jam, or eggs, bread is often the go-to option for millions. But holistic health coach Dr Mickey Mehta is urging people to stop and reconsider this habit. In a recent Instagram post, he stated, “Your gut will become a gutter if you eat bread every day,” which has lead to widespread debate.
A Habit Too Common, Yet Overlooked
Dr Mehta, who has coached people like the Ambanis and Sachin Tendulkar, frequently shares wellness tips with his followers. He says bread is so normalized in Indian households that people don’t think twice before eating it. “When I ask people what they had for breakfast, the most common answers are ‘tea and bread’, ‘omelette and bread’, ‘jam and bread’, or even ‘poha and bread’,” he shared.
White Bread: A Hidden Danger?
While bread may seem harmless, Dr Mehta warns that it could be silently harming our health — especially white bread, which he calls “the most dangerous thing you can ever eat.” According to him, even multigrain varieties aren’t entirely safe in excess. Dr Mehta shared a personal incident where he said that his daughter started feeling dizzy and light-headed, almost as if intoxicated. After rushing her to the hospital and finding no medical abnormalities, they just found that she had been consuming large amounts of multigrain bread.
What is Auto Brewery Syndrome?
Dr Mehta believes she developed symptoms of a rare condition called Auto Brewery Syndrome. “This syndrome occurs when undigested bread ferments in the gut and turns into ethanol — a form of alcohol — causing a person to feel drunk without drinking,” he explained.
“Bread Can Literally Choke Your Intestines”
Apart from this syndrome, he warns that regular bread consumption can interfere with digestion and clog the intestines, whether toasted or not. “Bread can literally choke your intestines,” he said, advising people to think twice before making it a daily food.
For those who struggle to quit bread entirely, Dr Mehta suggests eating it only when absolutely necessary — such as during hunger emergencies. He also recommends including Isabgol (psyllium husk) in the diet. “Taking it at night or first thing in the morning helps clean out the gut and push the bread out,” he said.
Something as routine as bread might not be as harmless as it appears, and becoming more mindful about our daily diet could lead to better long-term health.
