A 12-year-old British girl beat cancer for the fourth time—as she spent time in a bubble as part of her treatment, for Amelie Coelho Flatt, leukemia or blood cancer returned four times after she was first diagnosed at the age of three.
However, doctors did not give up on her. Amelie received a stem cell transplant from a donor in Germany who was the only match on the global bone marrow registers. After 128 days in an isolation bubble following the surgery, she is now finally free from the disease. “We can’t thank that stranger enough, as he was Amelie’s only chance of survival. "It was tough for her being in isolation in the bubble - all she wanted to do was go home to be with her younger brother,” said Sofia, her mother.
Amelie was diagnosed in July 2015 after vomiting before she was supposed to attend a birthday party. However, her parents did not think much of it, believing it was weather-related sickness. But when the symptoms only worsened and she became extremely lethargic.
Doctors then thought she had a urinary infection and was prescribed antibiotics. Thereafter, a detailed investigation revealed her cancer.
While it kept on coming back earlier, Amelie is now completely cured of the sickness.

What is leukemia?

Leukemia is a type of blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow and causes a rapid increase in abnormal white blood cells. Doctors say abnormal cells interfere with the production of healthy blood cells, potentially leading to various symptoms and complications.
Unlike other cancers, leukemia does not generally form a mass or tumour that can show up in imaging tests like X-rays and CT scans. There are many types of leukemia. Some are more common in children, while others are more common in adults. Experts say the treatment depends on the type of leukemia and other factors.

How does leukemia spread?

Doctors say leukemia begins in bone marrow - the soft, spongy tissue in the inner cavity of your bones, where your body’s blood cells are made. Blood cells go through various stages before reaching their fully mature forms. Mature and normal blood cells include red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
These blood cells start as hematopoietic stem cells. But if you have leukemia, one of the developing blood cells begins to multiply out of control and take over the space inside your bone marrow. They crowd out the cells, trying to develop into healthy red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
