Christopher Schwarzenegger, the son of Hollywood icon Arnold Schwarzenegger and journalist Maria Shriver, has finally opened up about his remarkable weight loss journey — and the key to his transformation might surprise you.
Speaking during a candid panel discussion at Beacher Vitality’s Happy & Healthy Summit in Los Angeles on Saturday, the 27-year-old shared that his weight loss was not the result of a quick fix or crash diet. Instead, it was a gradual process that began in 2019 while he was living in Australia.
“It was a big process,” Christopher admitted during the conversation with host Jeff Beacher and Kelly Osbourne. “I was on this big trip. I made it a big [deal] like, 'Oh, I'm going to go out and do all this stuff, be in Australia,’ and I just saw how much my weight was prohibiting me from doing the everyday activities.” One such activity he was forced to skip? Skydiving — something he had always wanted to do but couldn’t because of weight restrictions.
Saturday's summit marked the first time Christopher publicly addressed his transformation. He emphasized that it was anything but instantaneous. “It took a lot of trial and error,” he said. “Even still to this day, when people talk about before and after photos... I don’t feel like I’m the ‘after’ yet.”
What finally worked for him? Surprisingly, it was cutting out bread. “Weirdly enough, I gave up bread for Lent,” Christopher said. “I was like, 'Well, if I’m giving up bread, I might as well just take the opportunity — and I’m a good Catholic boy, so I’m not going to break it.' That was my one rule. I was like, 'I’m not going to break Lent.’ And so I lost 30 pounds just through that.”
While bread is a staple in many diets, some types — especially those made with refined white flour — can contribute to weight gain due to their high glycemic index and low fibre content. For those looking to follow in Christopher's footsteps without sacrificing their love for sandwiches or toast, there are healthier alternatives to consider.
Healthier Bread Alternatives:
Whole grain bread: Rich in fibre, this option helps with digestion and satiety.
  • Ezekiel bread: Made from sprouted whole grains and legumes, it’s nutrient-dense and low in sugar.
  • Oat bread: A good source of complex carbohydrates and fibre.
  • Lettuce wraps or collard greens: A low-carb option perfect for sandwiches and wraps.
  • Sweet potato toast: Sliced sweet potatoes, baked and topped with your favourite spreads, offer a nutritious alternative.
  • Almond or coconut flour flatbreads: These are gluten-free and lower in carbs, ideal for paleo or keto lifestyles.
